Thoughts from Counselor Ann Spooner: To Stay Away or Draw Near?

Even though we are now in phase “yellow,” many are still practicing social distancing out of an abundance of caution or due to medical necessity. For many weeks now, we have repeatedly heard the importance of social distancing for the sake of ourselves and others.

This is necessary and wise counsel. However, it can lead to a sense of isolation and loneliness.

Even as we begin to see more friends and family, not being able to hug them can still leave a void. COVID calls for distancing. But God invites us to approach and come to him.

Additionally, faithful counseling can bring individuals closer to the light of God.

Furthermore, the longing to connect with people in person has grown deeper and the impatience stronger. With faithful counseling we are able to offer individuals comfort and respite from today’s confusion and chaos.

Often, when I feel myself swirling around in this struggle, I find my way out by listening to music and remembering scriptures that remind me of God’s closeness and His desire to draw me even closer when I am in the midst of loneliness and uncertainty.

Luckily, God reminds me that underneath me are His everlasting arms (Deut. 33:27). That’s pretty close! It’s as if He is saying, “I’ve got this.”

Furthermore, the words from an old hymn “How Firm a Foundation” promise that God upholds me with His righteous right hand.

Another hymn states, “Vast, unmeasured, boundless, free...underneath me, all around me is God’s love for me.” (Taken from the hymn, “O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus.” No social distancing required here.)

In the midst of anxiety and uncertainty about what the “new normal” will look like, I am reassured that God will guide me along these unfamiliar paths and not forsake me (Isaiah 42:16). He’ll stay close.

Contemporary worship songs also speak of God’s closeness and His invitation for us to draw close to Him. One of my favorites is “Come to Me” by Jenn Johnson.

I’ve included some of the lyrics which I hope will bring you peace and comfort:

“I am the Lord Your God, I go before you now, I stand beside you, I’m all around you. Though you feel I’m far away, I’m closer than your breath.

I am with you more than you know … I am your anchor in the wind and the waves. I am your steadfast, so don’t be afraid.

Though your heart and flesh may fail you, I’m your faithful strength. I am with you wherever you go. Come to me, I’m all you need. Come to me, I’m everything.”

In the midst of our circumstances, God wants you and me to know that none of us ever have to distance ourselves from Him. We can come as close to Him as we want.

“Come all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” - Matthew 11:28
